Milwaukee boasts numerous fantastic taco spots, but when we discovered a restaurant specializing in chilaquiles and tacos, we knew we had to check it out. Located in the rapidly growing West Allis food scene, Las Cazuelas has been creating quite a buzz among local foodies—and after our visit, we can see why!

FOOD
Since chilaquiles are a key part of the restaurant’s identity, we had to try them, but not just a regular order. We opted for the chilaquiles flight, which allowed us to sample three different sauces. It was tough to choose, but we settled on spicy green tomatillo, smoky chipotle, and savory poblano—each offering a distinct and delicious flavor profile. The kitchen even accommodated one-half of our review team by serving the traditional egg topper on the side, making it easy for us to enjoy the dish. One tip for future visits? Eat the chilaquiles first! We got caught up sampling other items, and by the time we returned to them, they had softened. Even so, the flavors still held up, and we were pleased with our sauce choices.
So what distracted us from diving into the chilaquiles immediately? The Molcajete. This massive, artisan-crafted hot stone bowl overflowed with grilled steak, vegetables, melted cheese, jalapeños, and even cactus slices. The presentation was stunning, but the steak was slightly gristly—next time, we might opt for a different protein. The sheer abundance of ingredients made it a bit challenging to navigate (separating the onions and cactus proved tricky), but overall, it was a dish worth experiencing.
Of course, we couldn’t leave without trying the tacos. We ordered chicken, carnitas, and birria, all served on corn tortillas topped with classic cilantro and onions. Each was delicious, but the birria was the standout. We would return just for the tacos alone!
We chose a strawberry margarita and a cranberry mimosa to wash it all down. While the margarita was light on the kick, the cranberry mimosa was a refreshing surprise. Mimosas at night? It made more sense once we realized Las Cazuelas offers an all-day breakfast menu, making it an excellent brunch-into-dinner spot. We’re also intrigued by their Jamaica (hibiscus) mimosa option—definitely one to try next time!
SERVICE

From the moment we sat down, our server, Eric, set the tone for a great experience. He quickly brought out complimentary chips and salsa and was incredibly knowledgeable about the menu. We loved that he had photos of the dishes on hand to help us visualize our options—especially helpful for items we weren’t as familiar with. His attentiveness and enthusiasm made a lasting impression.
MEMORABILITY
Las Cazuelas excels in both flavor and experience. The dramatic presentation of the molcajete alone makes it a must-try, and the ability to customize the chilaquiles keeps things exciting. The restaurant strikes a lively yet comfortable atmosphere, with energetic music videos playing without being too loud. We even noticed several birthday celebrations, which added to the festive vibe.
With its diverse menu, welcoming staff, and memorable dishes, Las Cazuelas is definitely a place we’d revisit. Next time, we plan to dive deeper into their all-day breakfast options—and grab another round of those tacos!
